The rules
Anyone can join the game at any time.
I'll try to create a new quiz on a regular basis (probably at the end
of the month). To play the game you'll have to register so your answers
can be asigned to the right person.
Also, every player who submits answers to the quiz will have to submit
at least one new quote (including movie title). From these the next quiz
will be forged and so on and so on.
Will I win anything?
No - except, of course, the fame and glory of one who is truly versed
in the movie quotes. And that should probably be enough for anybody.
Is there a maximum or minimum length for a quote?
Not really. The database will accept quotes up to 65000 characters, which
should be enough for any quote. I mean, it's "guess the quote"
not "guess the script". Both short and long quotes are valid,
however you should remember that the quote should be memorable. And that
is more often the case with quotes that contain a dialogue rather than
a single line. You should also remember that the movie industry does like
to copy from itself. "I'm the king of the world." seems like
an obvious quote from "Titanic", but has been used in so many
references and satires, that it would be hard to judge where it really
comes from.
Is there a restriction on which movies can be quoted?
No. But you are well advised to choose movies where there is actually
a chance that many people saw it. "Indiana Jones and the temple of
doom" is a good choice. "Blood sports XXV" is not so good.
"Debby does Dallas" is very bad. If I have a feeling that someone
deliberately chooses bad quotes I might feel inclined to penalize him
or her for that.
Also I prefer if I don't keep getting quotes from the same movies, because
the game becomes really boring really fast that way. So if you find a
quote from a movie in the running quiz try not to quote from the same
movie again at least in this quiz (the dreaded "Pulp Fiction"
syndrome).
I think then I'd rather not enter a new quote anyhow.
Well - that will be penalized. Any empty "new quote" or any
quote I think to be deliberately wrong will be penalized with a one point
penalty in the overall rankings.
How should good quotes look?
It's best to format quotes so that they are easy to read. For example,
you should put quotes around the speech of a single person:
"And I shall strike down thee with vengeance and furious anger!"
If two persons are talking, an added hyphen in front makes it easier
to discern when the talking person changes:
- "Never say that again to me!"
- "And what will happen if I do?"
If there are three or more persons talking, it might be a good idea to
add an identifying character (but no the initials of the person!) so that
it is much clearer who is talking. If it is important to the conversation
it might also be appropriate to add the gender of the person:
Man A: "Okay, let's get in and let all hell loose..."
Man B: "Okay!"
Man C: "Okay!"
Woman: "Guys, while you are inside, could you bring some diapers
for the baby?"
